اَلْعِلْمُ مُجَلَّةٌ، اَلجَهْلُ مَضَلَّةٌ۔
Knowledge makes one lofty, ignorance misguides.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العلم مجلة، الجهل مضلة
which translates to
Knowledge makes one lofty, ignorance misguides.
This beautiful Hadith highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and the detrimental consequences of remaining ignorant.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (ilm) "علم" refers to knowledge, which encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. It is the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. The word (mujalla) "مجلة" means to elevate or raise someone to a higher status or position. On the other hand, the word (jahal) "جهل" refers to ignorance, the lack of knowledge or understanding. The word (mudhilla) "مضلة" signifies misguidance or being led astray.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. Those who seek knowledge are elevated in their understanding and are guided towards the truth.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse further emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor. It is through knowledge that individuals are raised in their status and are granted a higher position in the sight of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of seeking knowledge. Knowledge is not only a means of personal growth and development but also a means of attaining closeness to Allah. It is through knowledge that one gains a deeper understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
Moreover, knowledge empowers individuals to make informed decisions and avoid falling into the traps of ignorance. Ignorance, as mentioned in the Hadith, leads to misguidance. It blinds individuals from recognizing the truth and can lead them astray. Ignorance can manifest in various forms, such as ignorance of religious teachings, ignorance of societal issues, or ignorance of one's own self.
For instance, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah warns against spreading rumors and making assumptions without verifying the information. This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and avoiding ignorance, as it can lead to false judgments and misunderstandings.
Furthermore, the consequences of ignorance can be seen in the world today. Ignorance often breeds intolerance, prejudice, and injustice. It hinders progress and prevents individuals from realizing their full potential. Conversely, knowledge promotes understanding, empathy, and justice. It enables individuals to contribute positively to society and make informed decisions that benefit themselves and others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of seeking knowledge and avoiding ignorance. Knowledge elevates individuals and guides them towards the truth, while ignorance leads to misguidance and hinders personal and societal growth. As Muslims, it is our duty to seek knowledge, both religious and worldly, in order to fulfill our potential and contribute positively to society. May Allah grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and may He protect us from the pitfalls of ignorance.
