(Ghurar al-Hikam: Praise And Extolment)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the good qualities and actions of others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Every praiser has the right to a good reward or a handsome gift from whom he praises.
This Hadith highlights the significance of recognizing and praising the virtues, accomplishments, and positive attributes of others.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by analyzing some of the key words and phrases. The word (muthn) "مُثْن" refers to the one who praises or acknowledges the good qualities of others. It implies showing gratitude and appreciation for the actions and virtues of someone. The word (athna) "أثْنى" means to praise or commend someone for their good deeds or qualities. It signifies expressing admiration and recognition for the positive aspects of an individual.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that every praiser, every person who acknowledges and praises others, is entitled to a good reward or a handsome gift from the one being praised. This implies that when we recognize and appreciate the good in others, we not only uplift their spirits but also create a positive atmosphere of encouragement and motivation. Our praise and recognition can serve as a source of inspiration for others to continue doing good and striving for excellence.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of recognizing and appreciating the good in others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.
This verse encourages us to refrain from belittling or mocking others, as they may possess qualities or virtues that are superior to our own.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25),
We sent aforetime our messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that people may stand forth in justice.
This verse highlights the importance of justice and fairness in our interactions with others. Praising and acknowledging the good in others is an act of justice, as it recognizes their efforts and contributions.
The consequences of implementing the teachings of this Hadith are profound. When we genuinely praise and appreciate the good in others, we foster an environment of positivity, encouragement, and unity. Our words of recognition can uplift the spirits of those being praised and motivate them to continue their good deeds. Moreover, by acknowledging the virtues and accomplishments of others, we cultivate humility within ourselves, recognizing that everyone has their unique strengths and talents.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be individuals who actively seek out the good in others and express our appreciation for their positive qualities and actions. By doing so, we not only fulfill the rights of those being praised but also contribute to the betterment of our communities and society as a whole. Let us remember that our words of praise and recognition have the power to inspire and uplift others, and ultimately, earn us a good reward from Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
May Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) grant us the ability to recognize and appreciate the good in others, and may He reward us abundantly for our sincere praise and recognition. Ameen.
