(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vices And Those Who Commit Them)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كُلُّ عاص مُتَأَثِّمٌ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Every disobedient one is a sinner.

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (‘āṣ) "عاص" refers to someone who disobeys or rebels against the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This includes those who intentionally violate the laws of Islam, neglect their religious obligations, or engage in sinful acts. The term (muta'aththim) "مُتَأَثِّمٌ" refers to someone who commits sins and transgressions.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the consequences of disobedience and sin. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:81), Allah says,

Indeed, those who commit sin and wrong themselves - Allah does not forgive the sins.

This verse highlights the severity of sin and the importance of avoiding disobedience.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:32), Allah warns,

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

This verse specifically addresses one form of disobedience and emphasizes the gravity of engaging in immoral acts.

Imam Ali's statement,

Every disobedient one is a sinner,

serves as a reminder to Muslims of the consequences of disobedience and the need to strive for righteousness. It highlights the fact that every act of disobedience, no matter how small, is considered a sin in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

This Hadith encourages Muslims to reflect on their actions and strive to avoid disobedience. It reminds us that even seemingly minor acts of disobedience can accumulate and lead to a sinful lifestyle. By being conscious of our actions and striving to follow the teachings of Islam, we can avoid falling into the trap of disobedience and sin.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and understanding of Islam. His statement serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the consequences of our actions. By studying the Quran and reflecting on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt, we can gain a deeper understanding of the principles of Islam and strive to live a righteous life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that every act of disobedience is considered a sin in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It serves as a call to Muslims to reflect on their actions, strive for righteousness, and avoid falling into the trap of disobedience and sin. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the temptations of disobedience.
