لا يَغُرَّنَّكَ ما أصْبَحَ فيهِ أهْلُ الغُرورِ بِالدُّنيا، فَإنَّما هُوَ ظِلٌّ مَمْدُودٌ إلى أجَل مَحْدُود۔

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this thought-provoking saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns the Muslims not to be deceived by the materialistic pursuits and worldly possessions of those who are engrossed in vanities. He advises us to not be swayed by the temporary pleasures and luxuries of this world, for they are nothing more than an extended shadow that will eventually fade away.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this hadith to gain a better understanding of its meaning and significance. The term (ghuroor) "غُرورِ" refers to the allure and deception of worldly possessions and desires. It encompasses the materialistic pursuits, wealth, and power that often captivate and distract individuals from the true purpose of their existence.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) cautions us against being deceived by the condition of those who are consumed by these vanities. He reminds us that the worldly possessions and pleasures that they enjoy are merely transient and fleeting. They are like an extended shadow, which may appear substantial and captivating, but ultimately lacks substance and permanence.

To further understand the wisdom behind this advice, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly reminds us of the temporary nature of this world and the importance of focusing on the eternal life to come. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (57:20)

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse emphasizes that the attractions and pursuits of this world are merely temporary and illusory. They may bring temporary pleasure and satisfaction, but they ultimately fade away, leaving behind nothing but disappointment and regret. The true purpose of our existence lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah and preparing for the eternal life in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for us to prioritize our spiritual growth and focus on the everlasting rewards of the Hereafter. It encourages us to detach ourselves from the allure of material possessions and to seek contentment in the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of righteous deeds.

By recognizing the transient nature of worldly pursuits, we can free ourselves from the shackles of materialism and find true fulfillment in our relationship with Allah. This realization enables us to make choices that align with our ultimate purpose and to invest our time and resources in endeavors that have lasting value.

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to not be deceived by the temporary attractions and vanities of this world. It urges us to prioritize our spiritual growth and to seek the pleasure of Allah above all else. By doing so, we can find true contentment and prepare ourselves for the eternal life in the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
