كُلُّ مُدَّة مِنَ الدُّنيا إلَى انْتِهاء، وَكُلُّ حَيّ فيها إلى مَمات وَفَناء۔
Every moment of this world is [taking it] towards the end and every living thing in it is [moving] towards its death and annihilation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature of this world and the inevitability of death and annihilation for every living being. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (muddah) "مُدَّة" in the Hadith refers to every moment or period of time in this worldly life. It emphasizes the fleeting nature of time and the fact that it is continuously moving towards its ultimate conclusion. This concept is beautifully expressed in the Quran in Surah Al-Asr, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 103:1-2)
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss
This verse reminds us that time is a precious resource, and if not utilized wisely, it can lead to loss and regret.
The word (hayy) "حَيّ" in the Hadith refers to every living being in this world. It encompasses all forms of life, including humans, animals, and plants. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that every living thing is moving towards its inevitable end, which is death and annihilation. This concept is echoed in the Quran in Surah Al-Anbiya, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 21:35)
Every soul will taste death, and We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that the transient nature of this world and the certainty of death should serve as a constant reminder for us to prioritize our actions and make the most of our time. It urges us to focus on the eternal life to come and to strive for righteousness and good deeds. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah, (Quran 2:45)
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]
This verse encourages us to be patient and steadfast in our worship, knowing that this world is temporary and our true home lies in the hereafter.
Furthermore, contemplating the transient nature of this world and the inevitability of death should also lead us to reflect on the purpose of our existence. It should motivate us to seek knowledge, engage in acts of kindness and charity, and strive for self-improvement. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and he serves as an inspiration for us to seek knowledge and apply it in our lives. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran in Surah Al-Zumar, (Quran 39:41)
Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to reflect on the transient nature of this world and the certainty of death. It urges us to prioritize our actions and strive for righteousness, knowing that our time in this world is limited. It also motivates us to seek knowledge, engage in acts of kindness, and strive for self-improvement. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand the true nature of this world and guide us on the path of righteousness.
