(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Sagacious)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he describes the characteristics of the sagacious people, or the wise individuals. The word (akyaas) "أكْياسَ" refers to those who possess wisdom, insight, and deep understanding. These individuals have a unique perspective on the world and possess qualities that set them apart from others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the sagacious people have a strong aversion towards the materialistic aspects of this world. They do not become infatuated with its temporary splendor and attractions. Instead, they lower their eyes from the allure of worldly possessions and pleasures. This signifies their detachment from the materialistic aspects of life and their focus on higher spiritual goals.

The phrase (waquloobahum anha sarafu) "وَقُلُوبَهُمْ عَنْها صَرَفُوا" means that they redirect their hearts away from the worldly distractions and towards the eternal abode. Their hearts are not captivated by the temporary pleasures and pursuits of this world. Instead, they yearn passionately for the everlasting abode, which refers to the hereafter and the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having a balanced perspective towards worldly possessions and desires. While it is not forbidden to enjoy the blessings of this world, the sagacious people recognize that true fulfillment and success lie in prioritizing the eternal life over the temporary one. They understand that the materialistic aspects of this world are fleeting and transient, whereas the rewards of the hereafter are everlasting.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Taghabun, verse 15:

Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward.

This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly possessions and emphasizes the importance of focusing on the eternal rewards that Allah has prepared for the believers.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 200, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And among them are some who say, 'Our Lord, give us in this world,' and they will have no share in the Hereafter.

This verse serves as a reminder that those who prioritize worldly gains over the hereafter will be deprived of the eternal rewards promised by Allah.

The consequences of embodying the characteristics described in this Hadith are profound. By detaching themselves from the materialistic aspects of this world, the sagacious people free themselves from the distractions that hinder their spiritual growth. They are able to focus on cultivating their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and striving for righteousness. Their hearts are filled with the love and yearning for the everlasting abode, which serves as a driving force for their actions and choices in this world.

The sagacious people understand that their actions in this world have consequences in the hereafter. They strive to lead a life that is pleasing to Allah, seeking His forgiveness and mercy. They prioritize acts of worship, charity, and kindness towards others, knowing that these deeds will be rewarded in the eternal abode.

As Muslims, we should reflect upon this Hadith and strive to embody the qualities of the sagacious people. We should strive to detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of this world and focus on the eternal rewards promised by Allah. By prioritizing the hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world, we can attain true success and fulfillment in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all on the path of wisdom and righteousness.
