— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Disbelief)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الكفر مغرم" which translates to "Disbelief is loss." This concise statement holds meaning and serves as a reminder for all Muslims.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (disbelief) "الكفر" refers to the rejection or denial of the truth, specifically the rejection of the Oneness of Allah and the teachings of Islam. It encompasses a state of being ungrateful and unappreciative towards the blessings and guidance bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). (loss) "مغرم" signifies the deprivation and deprivation of success, both in this world and the Hereafter.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the message conveyed in this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 39:

And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

This verse emphasizes the dire consequences of disbelief, as those who reject the signs of Allah will be condemned to eternal punishment in the Hellfire.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, verse 85, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.

This verse highlights that any alternative to Islam as a way of life will lead to loss and failure in the Hereafter.

Reflecting on the Hadith, "Disbelief is loss," we can comprehend its profound implications. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that disbelief is not only detrimental in the Hereafter but also in this worldly life. By rejecting the truth and denying the guidance of Islam, individuals distance themselves from the mercy and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Disbelief leads to a life devoid of spiritual fulfillment, moral guidance, and purpose. It results in a loss of tranquility, contentment, and inner peace. Moreover, the consequences of disbelief extend beyond personal consequences. It can lead to societal decay, moral corruption, and the erosion of ethical values.

Conversely, embracing faith and accepting the truth of Islam brings about immense benefits and blessings. It leads to a life of purpose, righteousness, and spiritual growth. The Quran states in Surah Yunus, verse 62:

No doubt! Verily, the Awliya' of Allah, no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve.

This verse assures believers that by adhering to the teachings of Islam, they will be protected from fear and grief.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for all Muslims. It highlights the severe consequences of disbelief and emphasizes the importance of embracing faith and adhering to the teachings of Islam. By recognizing the loss inherent in disbelief, we are motivated to strengthen our faith, seek knowledge, and strive for righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and protect us from the perils of disbelief.
