(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
بِالصَّبْرِ تُدْرَكُ مَعالِي الأُمُورِ۔
This can be translated as,
Through patience, the loftiness of matters is attained.
This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of patience in achieving success and reaching higher levels in various aspects of life.
The word (sabr) "صبر", meaning patience, is a fundamental concept in Islam. It refers to the ability to remain steadfast and composed in the face of difficulties, trials, and tribulations. Patience is not simply enduring hardships, but it also involves maintaining a positive attitude and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) throughout the journey.
The phrase (ma'ali al-umur) "مَعالِي الأُمُورِ" can be understood as the loftiness or greatness of matters. It signifies the elevated levels of achievement, success, and spiritual growth that can be attained through patience. It implies that by cultivating patience in our lives, we can reach higher levels of understanding, wisdom, and righteousness.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 153,
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the importance of patience as a means of seeking assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of difficulty. It emphasizes that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is with those who remain patient and steadfast.
In Surah Al-Imran, verse 200, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse encourages believers to practice patience, perseverance, and steadfastness in their faith and in facing life's challenges. It reminds us that true success lies in maintaining patience and fearing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 46, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse emphasizes the importance of patience in maintaining unity and strength within the Muslim community. It reminds us that through patience, we can overcome disputes and challenges, and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is with those who are patient.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the significance of patience not only in our spiritual journey but also in all aspects of life. Patience enables us to endure hardships, persevere in our goals, and maintain a positive mindset. It helps us overcome obstacles, make wise decisions, and achieve success in both worldly and spiritual matters.
For example, in the pursuit of knowledge, patience is essential. Learning requires dedication, effort, and perseverance. It is through patience that one can acquire deep understanding and wisdom. By remaining patient during the process of seeking knowledge, one can reach the loftiest levels of understanding and become a beacon of knowledge for others.
Similarly, in matters of personal development and self-improvement, patience plays a crucial role. It takes time and consistent effort to develop good habits, overcome weaknesses, and grow as individuals. By practicing patience, we can gradually transform ourselves and attain the highest levels of moral and spiritual excellence.
Moreover, in relationships and interactions with others, patience is vital. It allows us to maintain composure, listen attentively, and respond with wisdom and kindness. Patience helps us navigate conflicts, build bridges, and foster harmonious relationships. By exercising patience, we can elevate the quality of our interactions and contribute to a more compassionate and understanding society.
