Hadith #7602

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ طالَ عُمْرُهُ كَثُرَتْ مَصائِبُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

One whose life is long, his tribulations become many.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the reality that as one's life extends, they are likely to encounter numerous trials and hardships.

To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. The word (taala) "طالَ" refers to the prolongation or extension of something, in this case, one's life. The word (umruhu) "عُمْرُهُ" signifies the duration or span of one's life. Lastly, the word (masa'ibuhu) "مَصائِبُهُ" refers to the trials, tribulations, or calamities that a person experiences.

This Hadith resonates with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us of the inevitability of trials and tribulations in life. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse emphasizes that trials are a part of life and are meant to test our patience and faith.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah says,

Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tested?

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the correlation between the length of one's life and the increase in trials and tribulations. This is because life itself is a test, and the longer we live, the more opportunities we have to face difficulties and hardships.

They test our patience, resilience, and faith, allowing us to develop and strengthen these qualities. Allah says in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2,

And We have certainly tested those before them, so that Allah may make evident those who are truthful and those who are liars.

Secondly, trials and tribulations remind us of our dependence on Allah and our need for His guidance and support. They humble us and bring us closer to Him, as we turn to Him in times of difficulty. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186,

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.

Lastly, trials and tribulations serve as a means of distinguishing the true believers from those who merely claim to believe. They separate those who remain steadfast in their faith and trust in Allah from those who waver or abandon their beliefs in times of hardship. Allah says in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 29,

And say, 'The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve.'

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that as our lives extend, we are likely to encounter numerous trials and tribulations.
