(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Miser And The Avaricious)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البخيل خازن لورثته" which translates to

The miser is a treasurer for his heirs.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and provides valuable guidance for Muslims in understanding the importance of generosity and the consequences of being miserly.

To fully comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of key words. The term (al-bakhil) "البخيل" refers to a person who is excessively stingy and reluctant to spend their wealth. Such individuals are characterized by their unwillingness to give, even when they possess an abundance of resources. The word (khazin) "خازن" denotes a treasurer or guardian who is responsible for safeguarding and managing wealth. Lastly, (li-warithatihi) "لورثته" means "for his heirs," indicating that the miser's wealth is preserved solely for the benefit of those who inherit it.

In order to gain a deeper understanding of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of generosity and condemns the act of hoarding wealth. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:9), Allah says,

And [also for] those who were settled in the Home [i.e., Al-Madinah] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

This verse highlights the virtue of the Ansar (the residents of Madinah) who welcomed and supported the Muhajirun (the emigrants from Makkah). Despite their own limited resources, the Ansar displayed selflessness and generosity by giving preference to the needs of others over their own. This exemplifies the opposite of miserliness and serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be charitable and compassionate towards those in need.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), Allah says,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse illustrates the immense rewards and blessings that come from spending wealth in the path of Allah. It emphasizes the concept of "sadaqah," which encompasses acts of charity, kindness, and generosity. By giving to others, Muslims not only benefit the recipients but also multiply their own rewards in the eyes of Allah.

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. The statement

The miser is a treasurer for his heirs

highlights the shortsightedness and self-centeredness of those who hoard their wealth. While they may accumulate material possessions during their lifetime, their unwillingness to share and contribute to the betterment of society ultimately leads to their wealth being inherited by others. In essence, their wealth becomes a burden rather than a source of benefit.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to adopt a mindset of generosity and selflessness. By being charitable and giving to those in need, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also ensure that our wealth is utilized in a manner that brings about positive change and lasting impact. Generosity is not limited to monetary contributions; it extends to acts of kindness, support, and empathy towards others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid the pitfalls of miserliness and embrace the virtues of generosity. It urges us to reflect on the purpose of wealth and the responsibility we have towards our fellow human beings. By following the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his noble progeny, we can strive to be treasurers of goodness and blessings in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody the spirit of generosity and selflessness.
