(Ghurar al-Hikam: Moderation)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنِ اقْتَصَدَ فِي الغِنى والفَقْرِ فَقَدِ اسْتَعَدَّ لِنَوائِبِ الدَّهْرِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of moderation in both affluence and poverty, as it prepares one for the challenges and trials of life.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to better understand its meaning. The word (iqtasada) "اقْتَصَدَ" translates to "moderate" or "to be moderate." It signifies the act of striking a balance and avoiding extremes. The term (al-ghina) "الغِنى" refers to affluence or wealth, while (al-faqr) "الفَقْرِ" denotes poverty or need. Finally, (nawā'ib al-dahr) "نَوائِبِ الدَّهْرِ" refers to the calamities or trials of time.

To further understand the significance of moderation in affluence and poverty, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:22),

No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy.

This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. By being moderate in both wealth and poverty, we prepare ourselves to face these challenges with resilience and patience.

Another verse that supports the concept of moderation is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reassures us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not place a burden on us that we cannot handle. By practicing moderation, we ensure that we are equipped to face the trials and calamities that come our way.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to strike a balance in our lives, regardless of our financial situation. When we are affluent, moderation helps us avoid arrogance, extravagance, and the neglect of our responsibilities towards others. It reminds us to be grateful to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His blessings and to use our wealth in a manner that benefits not only ourselves but also the wider community.

Similarly, when we experience poverty or need, moderation prevents us from falling into despair, envy, or resentment. It reminds us to seek sustenance through lawful means and to have trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) provision. By being moderate in our approach to poverty, we maintain our dignity and avoid becoming consumed by material concerns.

The consequences of practicing moderation in both affluence and poverty are profound. It allows us to maintain a balanced and stable lifestyle, free from the extremes of excess or deprivation. This balanced approach enables us to navigate the challenges of life with wisdom, patience, and contentment. It also fosters a sense of empathy and compassion towards those who are less fortunate, as we understand the difficulties they face.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the exemplary knowledge and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His profound understanding of the Quran and his ability to extract practical guidance from its verses is evident in this Hadith. As Muslims, we should strive to emulate his teachings and incorporate moderation into all aspects of our lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of moderation in both affluence and poverty. By practicing moderation, we prepare ourselves for the trials and challenges that life presents. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which remind us of the inevitability of trials and the importance of maintaining balance in all circumstances. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody moderation in our lives.
