— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #365)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. Let us delve into the profound wisdom contained within this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The first part of the Hadith states,

Imagination is a clear mirror.

The word used for imagination in Arabic is (الْفِكْرُ) "al-fikr". Fikr refers to the process of contemplation, reflection, and deep thinking. It is through this process that our thoughts and ideas are formed. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares fikr to a "clear mirror," indicating that it has the potential to provide us with a clear and accurate reflection of ourselves and the world around us.

The second part of the Hadith states,

the taking of lessons (from things around) provides warning and counsel.

The phrase

the taking of lessons

is translated from the Arabic word (الاْعْتِبَارُ) "al-i'tibar". I'tibar refers to the act of observing and reflecting upon the experiences and actions of others in order to gain wisdom and guidance. It serves as a source of warning and counsel, guiding us towards the right path.

To support this concept, the Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of reflection and learning from the experiences of others. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

He is the One who expelled the disbelievers among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think that they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah. But Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts so they destroyed their houses by their own hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.

This verse highlights the importance of reflecting upon the fate of the disbelievers and taking heed from their downfall. By observing their actions and their false sense of security, we are reminded of the consequences of arrogance and disbelief. This serves as a warning and a lesson for us to remain humble and steadfast in our faith.

The final part of the Hadith states,

It is enough for improving yourself that you should avoid what you consider bad in others.

This part emphasizes the importance of self-improvement and self-accountability. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to avoid the negative traits and actions that we find displeasing in others. By doing so, we not only distance ourselves from harmful behavior but also strive towards personal growth and moral excellence.

The Quran supports this concept in various verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from mocking or belittling others, as they may possess qualities or virtues that are superior to our own. It encourages us to avoid negative behavior and to treat others with respect and dignity. By doing so, we not only improve our own character but also contribute to a harmonious and compassionate society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides valuable insights into the process of self-reflection, learning from the experiences of others, and striving for personal growth. By utilizing the power of contemplation and observation, we can gain wisdom, avoid negative traits, and improve ourselves. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to reflect upon our own actions and continuously strive for self-improvement.
