لِلْمُتَكَلِّمِ أوْقاتٌ۔
For every speaker there are times [and conditions where he is able to speak].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Speaker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
For every speaker there are times [and conditions where he is able to speak].
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims, regardless of their sect. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its meanings and implications in light of the Quran.
The word (mutakallim) "مُتَكَلِّمِ" in the Hadith refers to a person who speaks or communicates. It encompasses not only verbal communication but also any form of expression, including written or non-verbal communication. The term (awqat) "أوقاتٌ" refers to specific times or conditions.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of speaking at the right time and in the appropriate manner. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 2:83)
And speak to people good [words]
This verse highlights the importance of using kind and beneficial words when communicating with others.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah advises us, (Quran 22:78)
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice
This verse emphasizes the need for speaking justly and truthfully, ensuring that our words are in line with the principles of justice and fairness.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that there are specific times and conditions when it is appropriate to speak. This implies that we should exercise caution and wisdom in our communication, considering the context and circumstances before expressing our thoughts or opinions.
For example, during times of conflict or heated discussions, it is crucial to choose our words carefully and avoid escalating the situation. The Quran advises us in Surah Al-Furqan, (Quran 25:63)
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace
This verse teaches us the importance of responding to harsh words with peace and tranquility, rather than engaging in arguments or responding in a similar manner.
Similarly, there are times when silence is more appropriate than speaking. The Quran highlights the virtue of silence in Surah Al-A'raf, (Quran 31:19)
And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys
This verse encourages us to speak softly and avoid unnecessary noise, reminding us of the importance of silence in certain situations.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their words and to speak at the right time and in the appropriate manner. It encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our speech and to consider the impact it may have on others.
By adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive to become better communicators, fostering understanding, harmony, and peace within our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to speak with kindness, justice, and wisdom, and may He enable us to recognize the appropriate times and conditions for our words.
