لا تَجْعَلَنَّ لِلشَّيْطانِ في عَمَلِكَ نَصيباً، وَلا عَلى نَفْسِكَ سَبيلاً۔
Never allot a portion for Satan in your actions and do not give him access to your soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Satan)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا تَجْعَلَنَّ لِلشَّيْطانِ في عَمَلِكَ نَصيباً، وَلا عَلى نَفْسِكَ سَبيلاً۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of not allowing Satan to have any share in our actions and not giving him any access to our souls.
Let us delve deeper into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (naseeban) "نَصيباً" refers to a portion or share. It implies that we should not allocate any part of our actions to Satan. The word (sabeelan) "سَبيلاً" means a way or path. It signifies that we should not provide Satan with any means or access to our souls.
To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about Satan's deception in several verses. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:27), Allah says,
O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.
This verse highlights Satan's relentless efforts to misguide and deceive humans. He seeks to lead us astray from the path of righteousness. Therefore, it is crucial for us to be vigilant and not allow Satan to have any share in our actions. We must strive to keep our intentions pure and free from any influence of evil.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:64), Allah advises us,
And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them. But Satan does not promise them except delusion.
This verse emphasizes that Satan's promises are nothing but illusions and deceptions. He tries to entice us by making false promises and tempting us with worldly desires. However, we must remember that succumbing to Satan's temptations will only lead us astray and bring us further from the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for us to be cautious and vigilant in our actions. We should not allow Satan to influence our intentions, decisions, and actions. By constantly seeking refuge in Allah and seeking His guidance, we can protect ourselves from the whispers of Satan and stay on the straight path.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, which is evident in this Hadith. His profound understanding of the human psyche and the tactics of Satan allows us to reflect on the importance of guarding our actions and souls against the influence of evil.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and not allow Satan to have any share in our actions. By seeking refuge in Allah, staying steadfast on the path of righteousness, and constantly seeking His guidance, we can protect ourselves from the whispers of Satan and strive towards spiritual growth and closeness to Allah. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to follow the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt and protect ourselves from the influence of evil.
