The one upon whom the blessings of Allah are abundant, the people’s needs towards him also abound (so if he fulfils with it what Allah, the Glorified, has made obligatory for him, then he makes it last, and if he refuses what Allah, the Glorified, has made obligatory from it, then he has exposed it to cessation).
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the relationship between the blessings of Allah and the responsibilities that come with them. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that when someone is blessed abundantly by Allah, the people's needs towards that person also increase. This means that those who are bestowed with numerous blessings are often sought after by others for help, support, and assistance.
The word (niʿamu) "نِعَمُ" in the Hadith refers to the blessings and favors of Allah. These blessings can take various forms, such as wealth, knowledge, power, influence, or any other form of goodness that Allah bestows upon His servants. The word (ḥawāʾiju) "حَوَائِجُ" means needs or requirements. It signifies the needs of people towards the one who is blessed abundantly by Allah.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah, the Most High, says in Surah An-Nahl (16:46):
Or that Allah may catch them in the midst of their going to and fro (in their jobs), so that there be no escape for them (from Allah's punishment)?
This verse highlights the fact that Allah has the power to seize His blessings from those who do not fulfill their obligations towards them. If someone fails to fulfill what Allah has made obligatory upon them with regards to the blessings they have been given, then they have exposed those blessings to cessation. This means that Allah can take away those blessings and deprive them of their benefits.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah says:
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah does not burden us with responsibilities that are beyond our capabilities. Therefore, when Allah bestows His blessings upon us, He also expects us to fulfill the obligations that come with them. If we fulfill these obligations, then we make those blessings last and increase in their benefits. However, if we neglect or refuse to fulfill our obligations, then we risk losing those blessings and their benefits.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful Hadith serves as a reminder for us to be grateful for the blessings we have received from Allah. It also emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities towards those blessings. Whether it is wealth, knowledge, power, or any other form of blessing, we should utilize them in a manner that pleases Allah and benefits others.
For example, if someone has been blessed with wealth, they should fulfill their obligations of charity, helping the needy, and supporting good causes. By doing so, they not only fulfill what Allah has made obligatory upon them but also make their wealth last and increase in its benefits. On the other hand, if someone with wealth refuses to fulfill their obligations, such as neglecting charity or hoarding their wealth, they expose their blessings to cessation. Allah may take away their wealth or deprive them of its benefits.
Similarly, if someone has been blessed with knowledge, they should share it with others, teach and educate, and use it for the betterment of society. By fulfilling their obligations towards knowledge, they make it last and increase in its benefits. However, if someone with knowledge refuses to fulfill their obligations, such as withholding knowledge or using it for selfish purposes, they expose their blessings to cessation. Allah may take away their knowledge or deprive them of its benefits.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the blessings of Allah come with responsibilities. We should be grateful for these blessings and fulfill our obligations towards them. By doing so, we make those blessings last and increase in their benefits. However, if we neglect or refuse to fulfill our obligations, we risk losing those blessings and their benefits. May Allah grant us the understanding and ability to fulfill our responsibilities towards His blessings.
