أنْصِفْ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ قَبْلَ أنْ يُنْتَصَفَ مِنْكَ، فَإنَّ ذلِكَ أجَلُّ لِقَدَرِكَ،۔

Be equitable yourself before equity is sought from you, for indeed that is loftier for your status and more deserving of the pleasure of your Lord.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being just and fair in our actions and dealings with others. The Imam advises us to practice self-evaluation and self-correction, to ensure that we are treating others with equity and fairness before we are held accountable for our actions.

The word (ansif) "أنصف" in the Hadith means to be just, fair, and equitable. It implies treating others with equality and giving them their due rights. This includes being fair in our judgments, decisions, and interactions with others. The word (nafsik) "نفسك" refers to oneself, indicating that the first step towards justice is to evaluate our own actions and intentions.

This Hadith reminds us of the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. It urges us to rectify our own behavior and attitudes before expecting others to do the same. By doing so, we not only elevate our own status but also please our Lord, as justice and fairness are qualities beloved to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The concept of justice and fairness is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice and warns against oppression and injustice. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of treating others with respect and fairness, regardless of their social status or gender. It reminds us that no one should be ridiculed or insulted, as this goes against the principles of justice and equality.

Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25), where Allah says,

We sent aforetime our messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that people may stand forth in justice.

This verse emphasizes that the messengers were sent with clear signs and the Book (Quran) to establish justice among people. It further emphasizes the importance of justice as a fundamental principle in Islam.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their actions and intentions. It encourages us to be proactive in seeking justice and fairness, rather than waiting for others to demand it from us. By being just and fair in our dealings, we not only fulfill our obligations towards others but also elevate our own status in the eyes of Allah.

Practicing justice and fairness has far-reaching consequences. It fosters harmony and unity within society, as people feel valued and respected. It also promotes a sense of accountability and responsibility, as individuals strive to uphold the principles of justice in their actions and decisions. Moreover, it strengthens our relationship with Allah, as we align our behavior with His teachings and seek His pleasure.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be just and fair in their actions and dealings with others. It urges us to evaluate ourselves and rectify our behavior before expecting others to do the same. By practicing justice, we not only elevate our own status but also please our Lord. May Allah guide us all to be just and fair in all aspects of our lives.
