(Ghurar al-Hikam: Mercy And Compassion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ لَمْ تَسْكُنِ الرَّحْمَةُ قَلْبَهُ قَلَّ لِقاؤُها لَهُ عِنْدَ حاجَتِهِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having mercy in one's heart and how it affects the mercy one receives from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of need.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (rahmah) "رَحْمَةُ" refers to mercy, compassion, and kindness. It is a fundamental attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is manifested in His creation and His dealings with His servants. The word (qalbahu) "قَلْبَهُ" means heart, which symbolizes the core of a person's being, their emotions, and their intentions. (qalla) "قَلَّ" means to decrease or diminish, while (liqa'uha) "لِقَاؤُهَا" means meeting or encountering. And finally, (hajatihi) "حَاجَتِهِ" refers to one's need or necessity.

To comprehend the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46),

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the importance of having mercy and patience in our hearts, as it strengthens our resolve and grants us the support of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the connection between showing mercy to others and receiving mercy from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we have mercy in our hearts and extend it to our fellow Muslims, we increase the likelihood of receiving mercy from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in our times of need.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that the state of our hearts determines the level of mercy we receive from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). If our hearts are devoid of mercy, if we are harsh and unkind towards others, then we should not expect to receive abundant mercy from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) when we are in need. On the other hand, if our hearts are filled with mercy, if we are compassionate and forgiving towards others, then we can hope for Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) abundant mercy in our times of need.

This Hadith encourages us to reflect on our own hearts and evaluate the level of mercy within them. Are we kind and forgiving towards others? Do we show compassion and empathy? Or are we quick to judge and hold grudges? By cultivating mercy in our hearts, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of having mercy in our hearts. It teaches us that the level of mercy we receive from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of need is directly proportional to the mercy we have shown to others. Let us strive to be merciful, forgiving, and compassionate towards our fellow Muslims, so that we may receive the abundant mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) when we are in need. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with hearts filled with mercy and grant us His boundless mercy.
