(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Miser And The Avaricious)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لَيْسَ لِشَحيح رَفيقٌ۔" which translates to

The avaricious has no friend.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and carries a significant message for all Muslims.

To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used. The word (shahih) "شَحِيح" refers to a person who is excessively stingy, miserly, and unwilling to share their wealth or possessions. This person is driven by greed and possesses a strong desire to accumulate wealth for themselves, without considering the needs of others. The word (rafiq) "رَفِيق" means a companion or friend.

To further comprehend the implications of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking sustenance from Allah and relying on Him for our needs. It reminds us that true wealth and sustenance come from Allah, and it is through His blessings that we are able to acquire and enjoy worldly possessions.

Additionally, the Quran emphasizes the importance of generosity and sharing with others. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:9), Allah says,

And those who, before them, had homes (in Medina) and had adopted the Faith, show their affection to such as came to them for refuge, and entertain no desire in their hearts for things given to the (latter), but give them preference over themselves, even though poverty was their (own lot).

This verse highlights the selflessness and generosity of the early Muslims in Medina, who opened their homes and hearts to the migrants, prioritizing their needs over their own. It teaches us the value of helping others and sharing our blessings with those in need.

Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. The avaricious, who is consumed by greed and selfishness, finds it difficult to form genuine friendships or companionships. Their excessive attachment to wealth blinds them to the needs and feelings of others. They prioritize their own accumulation of wealth over the well-being and happiness of those around them. Consequently, their relationships lack sincerity, trust, and mutual support.

In contrast, a person who is generous and willing to share their blessings with others fosters strong and meaningful friendships. They prioritize the needs of others, and their selflessness creates an atmosphere of trust and love. Such individuals are not only beloved by their friends but are also cherished by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Allah says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134),

Those who spend (in Allah's Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allah loves the good-doers.

This verse highlights the importance of generosity, patience, and forgiveness, qualities that are essential for building and maintaining strong relationships.

Therefore, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to avoid the path of greed and selfishness. It encourages us to be generous, selfless, and compassionate towards others. By doing so, we not only strengthen our relationships with fellow Muslims but also earn the pleasure and love of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to embody the qualities of generosity and selflessness, and may Allah bless us with sincere and meaningful friendships.
