There is no brotherhood for the spiteful.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Spiteful)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لَيْسَ لِحَقُود أُخُوَّةٌ۔" This can be translated as,

There is no brotherhood for the spiteful.

In this amazing Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of sincere brotherhood and the detrimental nature of harboring feelings of spite and animosity towards others.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (haqood) "حَقُود" refers to someone who holds grudges, bears ill will, or harbors animosity towards others. This person is characterized by a deep-seated resentment and a desire to harm or undermine others. On the other hand, (ukhwah) "أُخُوَّةٌ" means brotherhood, which signifies a bond of love, compassion, and unity among believers.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of brotherhood and warns against harboring ill feelings towards others. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the unity and brotherhood that should exist among Muslims, and the need to resolve conflicts and disputes in a peaceful manner.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against suspicion and backbiting, saying,

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse highlights the destructive nature of suspicion and backbiting, which are manifestations of spite and ill will towards others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate sincere brotherhood and to avoid any form of animosity or ill feelings towards one another. When individuals harbor spite and ill will, it creates divisions and weakens the fabric of the Muslim community. It hinders the establishment of a strong and united ummah, which is essential for the progress and success of the Muslim community.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his teachings were rooted in the principles of the Quran. He understood that true brotherhood is built upon love, compassion, and forgiveness. By highlighting the negative consequences of harboring spite, he aimed to guide Muslims towards a path of unity, harmony, and mutual respect.

When individuals let go of their grudges and embrace the spirit of brotherhood, they create an environment of love and support. They become a source of strength for one another, and together, they can overcome challenges and achieve greatness. The absence of spiteful feelings allows for the growth of genuine bonds of brotherhood, where Muslims stand united and support one another in their spiritual, social, and worldly endeavors.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

There is no brotherhood for the spiteful

serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate sincere brotherhood and to avoid harboring ill feelings towards others. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of unity, love, and compassion among believers. By letting go of spite and embracing the spirit of brotherhood, Muslims can create a strong and united ummah, and strive towards the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to embody the true spirit of brotherhood and grant us the ability to let go of any ill feelings towards our fellow Muslims.
