Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of continuously seeking knowledge and engaging in discussions about what one has learned. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One who increases his study of knowledge [and discussion about what he has learnt] does not forget what he knows and benefits from it that which he does not know.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The key words in this Hadith are (study of knowledge) "مُدارَسَةَ العِلْمِ", (does not forget) "لَمْ يَنْسَ", and (benefits from) "واسْتَفادَ".

The phrase "مُدارَسَةَ العِلْمِ" refers to the continuous pursuit of knowledge, encompassing both the acquisition of knowledge and engaging in discussions about it. It highlights the importance of actively seeking knowledge and engaging in intellectual discourse to deepen one's understanding.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then states that one who engages in this continuous study of knowledge "لَمْ يَنْسَ" or does not forget what they have learned. This implies that the act of consistently studying and discussing knowledge helps to solidify and retain the information in one's memory. It serves as a reminder and reinforcement of what has been learned, preventing forgetfulness.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions that through this continuous study, one "واسْتَفادَ" or benefits from what they do not know. This means that by engaging in ongoing learning and discussions, individuals are able to gain new insights and understanding beyond what they initially knew. It opens doors to new knowledge and perspectives, allowing for personal growth and development.

The importance of seeking knowledge and engaging in discussions is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes the importance of knowledge as a means of remembrance and understanding.

In another verse, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11),

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse highlights the elevated status of those who believe and possess knowledge. It signifies that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation and growth.

The consequences of neglecting the pursuit of knowledge can be detrimental. Without continuous study and engagement, one's knowledge can stagnate, leading to forgetfulness and a lack of growth. It is through the continuous pursuit of knowledge that individuals can expand their understanding, gain new insights, and benefit from what they do not yet know.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, encourages us to embrace a lifelong journey of learning and intellectual engagement. By doing so, we can ensure that our knowledge remains fresh in our minds, and we can continue to benefit from new knowledge and perspectives. Let us strive to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and continuously seek knowledge, engage in discussions, and grow intellectually. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to acquire and apply knowledge for the betterment of ourselves and the Muslim ummah.
