(Ghurar al-Hikam: One Who Turns Back And The One Who Moves Forward)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

It may be that sometimes the one who turns back moves forward and the one who moves forward turns back.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the dynamic nature of life and the unpredictability of outcomes. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (mudbir) "مُدْبِرُ" in the Hadith refers to the one who turns back or retreats. This word comes from the root "د ب ر" which means to turn or reverse. On the other hand, the word (muqbil) "مُقْبِلُ" refers to the one who moves forward or advances. It is derived from the root "ق ب ل" which means to come or go towards something.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 216:

But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.

This verse reminds us that what may seem unfavorable or undesirable to us at first glance might actually lead to something beneficial in the long run. Sometimes, when we retreat from a situation or step back, it can open up new opportunities or protect us from harm.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 30, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

This verse highlights the divine wisdom behind unexpected outcomes. Even when it seems like our efforts to move forward are being hindered or thwarted, Allah's plan is always greater. He can turn the tables and bring success from unexpected directions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to remain humble and patient in the face of adversity. It teaches us that setbacks and obstacles should not discourage us, as they may actually be stepping stones towards progress. Similarly, it cautions us against becoming complacent or arrogant when we experience success, as it can lead to downfall if we become heedless of our actions.

For example, in the Battle of Uhud, the Muslim army initially had the upper hand but due to a lapse in discipline, some of the archers left their positions, allowing the enemy to launch a counterattack. This turn of events led to a temporary setback for the Muslims. However, it also served as a lesson in humility and a reminder of the importance of following instructions. The Muslims learned from their mistake and were able to regroup and achieve victory in subsequent battles.

In our personal lives, we may encounter situations where we face setbacks or unexpected challenges. It is during these times that we must remember the words of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). We should not lose hope or despair, but rather reflect on the possibility that these setbacks may ultimately lead to greater success or protect us from harm.

Conversely, when we experience success or achieve our goals, we should not become complacent or arrogant. We must remain humble and grateful to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His blessings, and continue to strive for excellence. The story of the people of Thamud serves as a cautionary tale in this regard. They were blessed with great wealth and power, but their arrogance and disobedience to Allah's commands led to their destruction.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the dynamic nature of life and the unpredictability of outcomes. It teaches us to remain patient and humble in the face of adversity, and to guard against complacency and arrogance in times of success. By reflecting on the wisdom of this Hadith and seeking guidance from the Quran, we can navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and steadfastness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to understand and implement the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in our lives.
