The believer's time has three periods: The period when he is in communion with Allah; the period when he manages for his livelihood; and the period when he is free to enjoy what is lawful and pleasant. It does not behove a wise person to be away (from his house) save for three matters, namely for purposes of earning, or going for something for the next life or for enjoying what is not prohibited.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #390)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the three important periods in a believer's life. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its deeper meanings in light of the Quran.
Firstly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions the period when a believer is in communion with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This refers to the time when a believer engages in acts of worship, such as prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah. It is during this period that the believer strengthens their connection with the Creator and seeks His guidance and mercy. The Quran emphasizes the importance of this period in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 1-2:
Successful indeed are the believers, those who humble themselves in their prayers.
This period of communion with Allah is essential for the spiritual growth and development of a believer. It allows them to seek guidance, seek forgiveness, and find solace in the remembrance of Allah.
Secondly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions the period when a believer manages for their livelihood. This refers to the time when a believer engages in work, business, or any means of earning a lawful income. It is during this period that a believer fulfills their responsibilities towards themselves and their families. The Quran emphasizes the importance of this period in Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 10:
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.
This period of managing for livelihood is not only a means of sustenance but also an opportunity for a believer to contribute positively to society and fulfill their obligations. It is a time when a believer can display honesty, integrity, and excellence in their work, thus earning the pleasure of Allah.
Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions the period when a believer is free to enjoy what is lawful and pleasant. This refers to the time when a believer engages in permissible activities that bring joy and happiness into their lives. It is during this period that a believer can enjoy the blessings and bounties bestowed upon them by Allah. The Quran emphasizes the importance of this period in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 32:
Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?' Say, 'They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.' Thus do We detail the verses for a people who know.
This period of enjoyment is not only permissible but also encouraged in Islam. It allows a believer to appreciate the blessings of Allah and find contentment in the lawful pleasures of life. However, it is important for a believer to ensure that their enjoyment remains within the boundaries set by Allah, avoiding anything that is prohibited.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further advises that a wise person should not be away from their home except for three matters. Firstly, for the purpose of earning a livelihood, which is essential for sustenance and fulfilling one's responsibilities. Secondly, for seeking something that will benefit them in the next life, such as seeking knowledge, performing acts of worship, or engaging in charitable deeds. And thirdly, for enjoying what is not prohibited, within the limits set by Allah.
This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a comprehensive guide for believers in managing their time and priorities. It highlights the importance of balancing one's spiritual, worldly, and personal lives. By engaging in acts of worship, fulfilling responsibilities, and enjoying lawful pleasures, a believer can lead a balanced and fulfilling life.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to manage our time effectively and seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives. May He bless us with the ability to strike a harmonious balance between our spiritual, worldly, and personal obligations. Ameen.
