لايَنْتَصِرُ المَظْلُومُ بِلاناصِر۔
The oppressed does not prevail without a helper.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Oppressed)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لايَنْتَصِرُ المَظْلُومُ بِلاناصِر۔" This Hadith can be translated into English as,
The oppressed does not prevail without a helper.
Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (mazlum) "مَظْلُومُ" refers to the one who is oppressed, wronged, or treated unjustly. This term encompasses individuals who are subjected to various forms of injustice, whether it be physical, emotional, or social. The mazlum is someone who is in a vulnerable position, lacking the power or resources to defend themselves against the oppressor.
The word (bilanasir) "بِلاناصِر" can be understood as "without a helper" or "without assistance." It emphasizes the fact that the oppressed cannot achieve victory or justice on their own. They require the support and aid of others to overcome their oppressors and attain justice.
This Hadith resonates deeply with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of standing up for justice and supporting the oppressed. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:75),
And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, 'Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?'
This verse highlights the responsibility of Muslims to defend the oppressed and fight for justice. It emphasizes the need for a helper, someone who can provide assistance and support in the face of oppression. It is through collective action and unity that the oppressed can find strength and ultimately prevail against their oppressors.
Furthermore, the Quran also emphasizes the consequences of neglecting the duty to support the oppressed. In Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:34-36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed. And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances. And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting. And when they saw them, they would say, 'Indeed, those are truly lost.'
This verse highlights the arrogance and mockery of the oppressors towards the believers. It serves as a reminder that if the oppressed are left without a helper, they become the subject of ridicule and humiliation. It is incumbent upon Muslims to prevent such injustices and provide assistance to those in need.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively support the oppressed and work towards establishing justice in society. It highlights the importance of unity and collective action in overcoming oppression. As Muslims, we should strive to be the helpers and allies of the oppressed, providing them with the support and assistance they need to achieve justice.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
The oppressed does not prevail without a helper
emphasizes the need for Muslims to stand up for justice and support those who are oppressed. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of defending the rights of the vulnerable and working towards a just society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be helpers of the oppressed and grant us the strength and wisdom to establish justice in the world.
