اُقْصُرْ رَأيَكَ على ما يَلْزَمُكَ تَسْلَمْ، وَدَعِ الخَوضَ فيما لايَعنيكَ تَكْرُمْ۔
Restrict your opinion to that which is necessary and you will be safe; avoid entering into that which does not concern you and you will be honoured.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opinions And The Opinonated)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to restrict our opinions to what is necessary and to avoid involving ourselves in matters that do not concern us. This guidance is not only practical but also holds deep spiritual significance.
Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (ra'iyaka) "رَأيَكَ" refers to one's opinion or viewpoint. The word (yalzamuka) "يَلْزَمُكَ" means that which is necessary or obligatory. The word (taslam) "تَسْلَمْ" means to be safe or secure. The word (khawdha) "خَوضَ" refers to entering or involving oneself in something. The word (ya'nika) "يَعْنِيكَ" means that which concerns or benefits you. Finally, the word (takrum) "تَكْرُمْ" means to be honored or respected.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of restraining our opinions and judgments about others. We are reminded not to ridicule or insult one another, as it leads to disobedience and wrongdoing. By restricting our opinions to what is necessary, we avoid falling into the trap of judging others based on superficial or biased perspectives.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding unnecessary involvement in the affairs of others. It warns against making negative assumptions, spying, and backbiting. Just as we would detest eating the flesh of our deceased brother, we should detest involving ourselves in matters that do not concern us. By doing so, we maintain the honor and dignity of ourselves and others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is a reminder to focus on what truly matters and to prioritize our actions and thoughts. By restricting our opinions to what is necessary, we save ourselves from unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings. We also protect our hearts from being tainted by negative assumptions and judgments.
Moreover, by avoiding involvement in matters that do not concern us, we demonstrate respect for the boundaries and privacy of others. This not only earns us honor and respect but also fosters a sense of unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their opinions and to avoid unnecessary involvement in the affairs of others. By adhering to this guidance, we can cultivate a culture of respect, unity, and peace within ourselves and our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to implement this advice in our lives and bless us with honor and security.
