يَنْبَغي لِمَنْ عَرَفَ اللّهَ سُبْحانَهُ أنْ لايَخْلُوَ قَلْبُهُ مِنْ رَجائِهِ وَخَوْفِهِ۔
It behoves the one who is cognizant of Allah, the Glorified, not to make his heart devoid of hope in Him and fear of Him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Cognizance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us that it is incumbent upon those who have truly recognized and understood Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) not to let their hearts be devoid of hope in Him and fear of Him. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (hope) "رَجَاء" and (fear) "خَوْف". The word "رَجَاء" refers to a feeling of optimism, expectation, and trust in Allah's mercy and forgiveness. It is the hope that motivates us to seek His pleasure and strive for righteousness. On the other hand, the word "خَوْف" signifies a sense of awe, reverence, and fear of displeasing Allah. It is the fear that prevents us from committing sins and motivates us to seek His forgiveness and guidance.
To understand the importance of maintaining both hope and fear in our hearts, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hijr (15:56),
And I have not created the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
This verse reminds us of our purpose in life, which is to worship Allah alone. Our worship should be driven by a balance of hope and fear. We should hope for His mercy and forgiveness, while also fearing His punishment and displeasure.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (consciousness of Allah).
Taqwa encompasses both hope and fear. It is the consciousness of Allah's presence, which leads to righteous actions driven by hope in His reward and fear of His punishment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all aspects of our lives. We should have hope in His assistance and fear of being left to our own devices.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith serves as a reminder for us to strike a balance between hope and fear. If we only have hope without fear, we may become complacent and take our relationship with Allah for granted. Conversely, if we only have fear without hope, we may become overwhelmed and lose sight of Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
Maintaining a balance between hope and fear allows us to navigate the challenges of life with a sense of purpose and humility. It motivates us to seek forgiveness when we err, to strive for excellence in our worship, and to constantly improve ourselves. It also reminds us that our actions have consequences and that we are accountable for our choices.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of not letting our hearts be devoid of hope in Allah and fear of Him. By maintaining a balance between hope and fear, we can lead a life of purpose, seeking Allah's pleasure, and striving for righteousness. May Allah grant us the ability to embody this advice in our lives and may He guide us on the straight path.
