لِسانُ الصِّدْقِ خَيْرٌ لِلْمَرْءِ مِنَ المالِ يُوَرِّثُهُ مَنْ لايَحْمَدُهُ۔
A goodly mention is better for a person than the wealth that he bequeaths to the one who does not praise him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
A goodly mention is better for a person than the wealth that he bequeaths to the one who does not praise him.
This profound statement emphasizes the significance of having a good reputation and being remembered for one's noble qualities and actions. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (lisānuṣ-ṣidq) "لِسانُ الصِّدْقِ", which translates to "a goodly mention" or "a truthful tongue." This phrase highlights the importance of speaking truthfully and having a reputation for honesty and integrity. It signifies the value of being known for one's virtuous character and righteous deeds, as opposed to material wealth.
To understand the significance of a goodly mention, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 11:114)
And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember
This verse highlights the power of good deeds in erasing sins and leaving a positive impact on others. When a person is remembered for their good actions, it becomes a means of purification and a source of blessings.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 17:29)
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent
This verse warns against being miserly and hoarding wealth, which can lead to a negative reputation and financial difficulties. Instead, the Quran encourages us to be generous and use our wealth for the betterment of society, as this leads to a goodly mention and blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that a good reputation is more valuable than material wealth. It highlights the importance of being known for our virtuous qualities, such as honesty, generosity, and kindness. When we are remembered for our good deeds, it not only benefits us in this world but also in the hereafter.
For example, imagine a person who is known for their honesty and trustworthiness. They are respected and admired by others, and people seek their advice and guidance. This person's goodly mention will continue even after their passing, as their reputation for truthfulness will be passed down through generations. On the other hand, if a person accumulates great wealth but is not praised or remembered for their good deeds, their wealth becomes meaningless and may even lead to negative consequences.
The motivation behind seeking a goodly mention should not be driven by a desire for praise or recognition from others. Rather, it should stem from a sincere intention to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). They were known for their impeccable character, and their goodly mention continues to inspire and guide Muslims to this day.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of having a good reputation and being remembered for our virtuous qualities. It reminds us that a goodly mention is more valuable than material wealth, as it brings blessings and purification. Let us strive to cultivate a truthful tongue, engage in righteous actions, and leave a positive impact on those around us, so that we may be remembered for our good deeds and attain success in both this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us a goodly mention.
