— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Consultation And Deliberation)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad () and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

There is no backing [and support that is stronger and] more reliable than consultation.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance and effectiveness of seeking counsel and advice in decision-making processes.

The word "mushawarah" in Arabic refers to consultation or seeking advice from others. It is derived from the root word "shura," which means to consult or deliberate. The word "mushawarah" implies the act of seeking guidance and input from others before making a decision. It highlights the significance of collective wisdom and the benefits of involving others in the decision-making process.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is in line with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of consultation. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran, verse 159:

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

This verse highlights the Prophet Muhammad's () approach of consulting his companions in matters of importance. It demonstrates the importance of being kind and gentle in dealing with others, seeking their input, and then making decisions based on consultation. The verse also emphasizes the need to rely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) after consulting others, recognizing that ultimate guidance comes from Him.

Another verse that supports the concept of consultation is found in Surah Ash-Shura, verse 38:

And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend.

This verse highlights the characteristics of the believers who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, and make decisions through consultation. It emphasizes the importance of collective decision-making and the utilization of resources provided by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in a manner that benefits the community.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to seek consultation and advice from others when making important decisions. It emphasizes the strength and reliability of consultation as a means of support and guidance. By involving others in the decision-making process, individuals can benefit from diverse perspectives and collective wisdom.

Consultation not only helps in making informed decisions but also fosters unity and harmony within the community. When people feel heard and valued, they are more likely to contribute positively to the decision and accept its outcome. Moreover, consultation promotes a sense of shared responsibility and accountability, as decisions are made collectively rather than being imposed by a single individual.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the practice of consultation throughout his life. He sought the advice of his companions and encouraged them to express their opinions freely. This approach ensured that decisions were made based on collective wisdom and consensus, leading to effective governance and justice.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of consultation in decision-making processes. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which highlight the significance of seeking advice and involving others in important matters. By seeking counsel, individuals can benefit from diverse perspectives, make informed decisions, and foster unity within the community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek consultation and make decisions that are pleasing to Him.
