(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
لاقَوِيَ أقْوى مِمَّنْ قَوِيَ عَلى نَفْسِهِ فَمَلَكَها۔
This Hadith emphasizes the strength and power of an individual who is able to overpower and gain mastery over their own soul.
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (laqawiya) "لاقَوِيَ" means
there is none stronger
or "none is stronger." It highlights the unparalleled strength possessed by the individual being referred to in the Hadith. The word (aqwya) "أقْوى" means "stronger" or "more powerful." It signifies the level of strength that the individual attains. The phrase (mimman qawiya 'ala nafsihi)
مِمَّنْ قَوِيَ عَلى نَفْسِهِ
translates to
than he who overpowers his soul.
It emphasizes the act of overpowering and gaining control over one's own desires, temptations, and weaknesses. Finally, the word (famalakah) "فَمَلَكَها" means
thereby gaining mastery over it.
It signifies the achievement of complete control and mastery over one's own soul.
To understand the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286):
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah has given us the strength and capability to overcome any challenges or temptations that we may face. By harnessing this inner strength, we can overpower our own souls and gain mastery over them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says:
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.
This verse highlights the importance of self-control and righteousness. The one who is able to overpower their soul and act righteously is considered noble in the sight of Allah.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the significance of self-discipline and self-control. It reminds us that true strength lies not in physical power or dominance over others, but in the ability to conquer our own desires and weaknesses. By gaining mastery over our souls, we can attain a higher level of spirituality and righteousness.
When an individual is able to overpower their soul, they become immune to the temptations of this world. They are not swayed by materialistic desires or worldly pleasures. Instead, they focus on pleasing Allah and following His commands. This level of self-control leads to a life of piety, humility, and contentment.
Moreover, by gaining mastery over our souls, we are able to make better choices and decisions. We become more aware of our actions and their consequences. We are less likely to engage in harmful or sinful behavior, as we are guided by a higher moral compass. This self-discipline leads to a life of integrity, honesty, and accountability.
The consequences of overpowering our souls are profound. It allows us to develop a strong connection with Allah and seek His pleasure above all else. It enables us to resist the temptations of Shaytan and stay on the straight path. It empowers us to overcome challenges and adversities with patience and perseverance. Ultimately, it leads to the attainment of eternal success in the Hereafter.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense knowledge and wisdom possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His deep understanding of human nature and spirituality is evident in his teachings. He emphasizes the importance of self-control and self-discipline as essential qualities for every Muslim to strive for.

It reminds us that true strength lies in self-control and righteousness. By harnessing our inner strength, we can resist temptations, make better choices, and lead a life of piety and integrity.
