لاتُذَمُّ أبَداً عَواقِبُ الإحْسانِ۔
The consequences of kindness are never dispraised.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
لاتُذَمُّ أبَداً عَواقِبُ الإحْسانِ۔
This can be translated into English as:
The consequences of kindness are never dispraised.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the light of the Quran.
The word (ihsan) "إحْسانِ" in this Hadith refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses all forms of benevolence, whether they are physical, emotional, or spiritual. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses acts of charity, compassion, forgiveness, and any other action that brings benefit to others.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of kindness and good deeds. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195):
And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the significance of performing acts of kindness and goodness, as it is something that is beloved to Allah.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Isra (17:23):
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
This verse emphasizes the importance of treating our parents with kindness and respect, even in their old age. It highlights the significance of ihsan towards our parents, who have sacrificed so much for us.
The consequences of kindness mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) are never dispraised because acts of kindness have far-reaching effects. When we show kindness to others, it not only brings immediate benefit to them but also has a positive impact on society as a whole.
For example, when we extend a helping hand to those in need, it creates a sense of unity and compassion within the community. This fosters a supportive environment where individuals feel valued and cared for. It also encourages others to follow suit and engage in acts of kindness themselves, creating a ripple effect of goodness.
Moreover, acts of kindness have a profound effect on our own spiritual well-being. When we engage in acts of ihsan, we purify our souls and strengthen our connection with Allah. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:93):
And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him.
This verse highlights the severe consequences of harming a believer, which stands in stark contrast to the everlasting rewards and blessings that come from acts of kindness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the consequences of kindness are never dispraised. Acts of kindness have a profound impact on individuals, communities, and our own spiritual well-being. By engaging in acts of ihsan, we not only bring immediate benefit to others but also create a ripple effect of goodness that spreads far and wide. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the spirit of kindness and goodness in our lives.
