Hadith #4300

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لاتُخاطِرْ بِشَيْء رَجاءَ أكْثَرَ مِنْهُ۔

This can be translated as,

Do not risk anything with the hope of getting more than it.

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds great wisdom and guidance for Muslims in their daily lives.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words and their implications. The word (tukhatir) "تُخاطِرْ" refers to taking a risk or putting something at stake. It implies engaging in an uncertain venture or action. The word (raja) "رَجاءَ" means hope or expectation. It signifies the desire for a positive outcome or a greater reward. Lastly, the phrase (akthar minhu) "أكْثَرَ مِنْهُ" translates to "more than it." It emphasizes the excessive or unrealistic expectations one may have.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not expect from us more than we are capable of. It teaches us the importance of being realistic in our aspirations and not taking unnecessary risks that may exceed our abilities or resources.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.

This verse highlights the consequences of excessive expectations and wrongful actions. It warns us that when we go beyond our limits and take risks based on unrealistic hopes, we are more likely to face loss and disappointment rather than success.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) wisdom in this Hadith can be understood by reflecting on various aspects of life. For example, in matters of business and finance, it is important to make informed decisions based on realistic expectations. Taking unnecessary risks in the hope of gaining more than what is reasonable can lead to financial instability and loss.

Similarly, in personal relationships, it is crucial to have realistic expectations and not risk the well-being of oneself or others for the sake of unrealistic desires. This Hadith reminds us to prioritize the preservation of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being over temporary gains that may come at a high cost.

Moreover, this Hadith also serves as a reminder of the importance of contentment and gratitude. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nahl, verse 53,

And whatever blessings you have, it is from Allah.

This verse emphasizes the need to be grateful for what we already have, rather than constantly seeking more. By being content with what Allah has blessed us with, we can find peace and satisfaction in our lives.
