The manner of action points to the measure of intelligence, so make good choices for it and be more precautious with regards to it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the correlation between one's actions and their level of intelligence. He states,
The manner of action points to the measure of intelligence, so make good choices for it and be more precautious with regards to it.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (fi'l) "فِعْلِ" refers to action or deed, while (kammiyah) "كَمِّيَّةِ" denotes the measure or quantity. (aql) "عَقْلِ" signifies intelligence or intellect. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the manner in which we act reflects the level of intelligence we possess.
To support this concept, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).
This verse highlights the importance of making good choices and being cautious in our actions. It is through the exercise of our intellect and understanding that we can discern what is best for us in various situations.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse emphasizes the need to make informed choices and not to act blindly or without knowledge. It is through the application of our intellect that we can avoid making hasty decisions that may have negative consequences.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to be cautious and meticulous in our actions. This means that we should carefully consider the consequences of our choices before acting upon them. We should strive to align our actions with the teachings of Islam and the values of righteousness. By doing so, we demonstrate our intelligence and understanding of the principles of our faith.
For example, when faced with a moral dilemma, a person with a higher level of intelligence will carefully weigh the options and choose the path that aligns with the teachings of Islam. They will consider the potential consequences of their actions and make choices that are in line with their values and beliefs. This level of thoughtfulness and mindfulness in decision-making is a reflection of their intelligence.
On the other hand, a person who acts impulsively or without considering the consequences may demonstrate a lack of intelligence or understanding. They may make choices that are not in line with the teachings of Islam, leading to negative outcomes for themselves and others.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of aligning our actions with our level of intelligence. By making good choices and being cautious in our actions, we demonstrate our understanding of the teachings of Islam and our commitment to righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to make choices that are pleasing to Him and beneficial for ourselves and others.
