(Ghurar al-Hikam: Verification)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاعَمَلَ كَالتَّحْقِيقِ۔" This can be translated as,

There is no action like verification.

In this Hadith, the word (tahqiq) "تَحْقِيقِ" refers to the act of verifying or confirming the truthfulness and authenticity of something.

To understand the connotation of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge, verifying information, and distinguishing between truth and falsehood. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (49:6)

O you who have believed, if a wicked person comes to you with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful

This verse highlights the significance of verification in order to avoid spreading false information and causing harm. It encourages Muslims to critically analyze and investigate any information before accepting or acting upon it. Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (17:70)

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference

This verse reminds us of the honor bestowed upon humanity by Allah, which includes the ability to reason, think critically, and seek knowledge. It is through the act of verification that we can fully utilize this honor and distinguish between truth and falsehood.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,

There is no action like verification,

emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and confirming the truth. It serves as a reminder to Muslims that blindly following or accepting information without verification can lead to misunderstandings, division, and even harmful consequences.

By verifying information, we can ensure that our actions are based on truth and righteousness. This applies to all aspects of our lives, whether it be religious beliefs, social issues, or personal matters. When we verify the authenticity of information, we are able to make informed decisions and act in a manner that aligns with the teachings of Islam.

For example, in today's era of social media and instant communication, it is crucial to verify the accuracy of news and information before sharing it with others. This Hadith teaches us to be cautious and responsible in our actions, ensuring that we do not contribute to the spread of false information or engage in harmful behavior based on unverified claims.

Furthermore, the act of verification extends beyond external information and also applies to our own thoughts, beliefs, and intentions. It encourages us to critically examine our own biases, assumptions, and motivations, ensuring that they are aligned with the principles of Islam.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

There is no action like verification,

serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge, verify information, and distinguish between truth and falsehood. By doing so, we can ensure that our actions are based on truth, righteousness, and the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to always seek the truth and act upon it.
