مَنْ كاشَفَكَ في عَيْبِكَ حَفِظَكَ في غيْبِكَ۔
One who discloses your faults to you guards you in your absence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Flaws And Faults)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
مَنْ كاشَفَكَ في عَيْبِكَ حَفِظَكَ في غيْبِكَ۔
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of sincere advice and counsel. Let us delve into the words of this Hadith and explore its deeper meaning in light of the Quran.
The word (kashfaka) "كاشَفَكَ" is derived from the root word (kashafa) "كَشَفَ", which means to uncover or disclose. In this context, it refers to someone who reveals or brings to light the faults or shortcomings of another person. The word (aybika) "عَيْبِكَ" means your faults or weaknesses. It encompasses both the physical and moral aspects of a person's character.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the one who discloses your faults to you is actually guarding you in your absence. This means that when someone sincerely advises you and points out your flaws, they are doing so out of concern for your well-being. They are acting as a protector, helping you rectify your faults and improve yourself.
This profound Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6):
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse encourages Muslims to verify the information they receive and not act hastily based on hearsay or assumptions. It teaches us to be cautious and not harm others unknowingly. Similarly, when someone points out our faults, it is essential to reflect upon their advice and evaluate ourselves. By doing so, we can rectify our mistakes and avoid causing harm to ourselves and others.
Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the importance of sincere advice and counsel. In Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.
This verse highlights the significance of advising one another towards truth and patience. It encourages Muslims to engage in sincere counsel, helping each other stay on the right path and remain steadfast in the face of challenges. When someone discloses our faults to us, they are fulfilling this duty of advising towards truth, guiding us towards self-improvement, and ultimately guarding us in our absence.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of humility and self-awareness. It teaches us to be open to constructive criticism and to view it as an opportunity for growth. When we accept our faults and work towards rectifying them, we become better individuals, both in the eyes of Allah and in the eyes of our fellow Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of sincere advice and counsel. It reminds us that those who disclose our faults to us are actually guarding us in our absence. By reflecting on their words and striving to improve ourselves, we can become better Muslims and contribute positively to our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to accept advice with humility and the strength to rectify our faults.
