اِفْعَلِ الخَيرَ ولا تُحَقِّرْ مِنْهُ شَيْئاً، فَإنَّ قَليلَهُ كَثيرٌ وفاعِلَهُ مَحبُورٌ۔

Do good and do not consider any of it insignificant, for verily little of it is plenty and its doer is happy [in the Hereafter].

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us a profound lesson about the importance of doing good deeds and not underestimating their value. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to engage in acts of righteousness and not to belittle any good deed, no matter how small it may seem. He reminds us that even the smallest of good deeds hold great significance in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (do) "اِفْعَلِ" emphasizes the importance of taking action and actively engaging in acts of goodness. It is a call to not just have good intentions, but to translate those intentions into tangible actions that benefit others and earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The phrase (good) "الخَيرَ" encompasses all acts of righteousness, kindness, and benevolence. It includes acts such as helping the needy, being honest, showing compassion, and fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and His creation. This Hadith encourages us to engage in all forms of good deeds, both big and small, without discrimination.

The phrase (and do not consider any of it insignificant)

ولا تُحَقِّرْ مِنْهُ شَيْئاً

is a reminder to not underestimate the value of any good deed, no matter how small it may seem. Sometimes, we may overlook or belittle certain acts of goodness, thinking that they are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. However, this Hadith teaches us that even the smallest acts of kindness have immense value in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To further emphasize the significance of every good deed, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran:

(Quran 99:7)

Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it.

This verse reminds us that even the tiniest good deed will not go unnoticed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Every act of goodness, no matter how small, is recorded and will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Hereafter.

The second part of the Hadith states, (for verily little of it is plenty and its doer is happy [in the Hereafter])

فَإنَّ قَليلَهُ كَثيرٌ وفاعِلَهُ مَحبُورٌ

This part highlights the abundant rewards that await those who engage in even the smallest acts of goodness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the Most Generous and He multiplies the rewards for our good deeds beyond measure.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran:

(Quran 6:160)

Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit].

This verse assures us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will multiply the rewards for our good deeds manifold. Therefore, even if our good deeds may seem insignificant in our eyes, they are of great value in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Hadith concludes by stating that the doer of good deeds will be (happy) "مَحبُورٌ" in the Hereafter. This happiness is not just temporary, but eternal. The rewards and blessings that await those who engage in acts of righteousness are beyond our imagination. The happiness of the doer of good deeds in the Hereafter is a reflection of the immense mercy and grace of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to actively engage in acts of goodness and not to underestimate their value. Every good deed, no matter how small, holds immense significance in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We should strive to do good in all aspects of our lives, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the eternal happiness that awaits us in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to do good and bless us with His mercy and forgiveness.
