Hadith #261

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

قَطَعَ الْعِلْمُ عُذْرَ الْمُتَعَلِّلِينَ۔

This can be translated as,

Knowledge dispels the excuse of those who advance excuses.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance and power of knowledge in removing the justifications and excuses that people often use to avoid taking responsibility for their actions or lack thereof.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the understanding and awareness of facts, information, and principles. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of knowledge and its transformative power. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it, emphasizing the superiority of the former. Similarly, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that knowledge has the power to dispel excuses because it equips individuals with the understanding and awareness necessary to fulfill their obligations.
