— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong bonds of brotherhood and friendship within the Muslim community. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, advises us that if we ever find ourselves in a situation where we are tempted to sever ties with a fellow believer, we should instead leave some room for friendship and maintain a connection, so that the person may have the opportunity to return to it in the future if they desire.

To fully understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (qati'ah) "قَطيعَةَ" refers to the act of cutting off or severing ties. It implies a complete and abrupt disconnection from someone. The word (akhika) "أخيكَ" means your brother, which in this context refers to a fellow Muslim. The word (baqiyyatan) "بَقِيَّةً" means a remnant or a remainder, indicating that even if we choose to distance ourselves from someone, we should still leave behind a portion of our friendship or goodwill towards them.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong bonds of brotherhood and unity among Muslims. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10),

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the unity and brotherhood that should exist among Muslims, and it encourages us to reconcile any disputes or conflicts that may arise.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us to

say to My servants that they should only say those things that are best: for Satan sows dissensions among them: for Satan is to man an avowed enemy.

This verse reminds us to speak with kindness and to avoid causing divisions among ourselves, as it is the work of Satan to sow discord and animosity.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is a practical application of these Quranic teachings. By leaving a portion of our friendship intact, we are not only demonstrating our commitment to unity and brotherhood but also leaving the door open for reconciliation and the possibility of restoring the relationship in the future. This approach is rooted in wisdom and foresight, as it recognizes the potential for growth and change in individuals over time.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to be proactive in preserving our bonds of brotherhood, even in challenging situations. By taking the initiative to maintain a connection, we demonstrate our willingness to forgive, reconcile, and foster a spirit of compassion and understanding. This approach can have profound consequences, as it opens the door for personal growth, healing, and the strengthening of the Muslim community as a whole.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize unity, forgiveness, and maintaining strong bonds of brotherhood. It teaches us the importance of leaving room for reconciliation and not severing ties completely, even in difficult circumstances. By following this advice, we can contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society, in line with the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to implement these teachings in our lives and grant us the wisdom to maintain strong bonds of brotherhood.
