(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blindness And The Blind)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رُبَّما أصابَ العَمِيُّ قَصْدَهُ۔

This can be translated as,

Sometimes the blind one arrives at his goal.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (amee) "عَمِيُّ" in this Hadith refers to a blind person. In the literal sense, a blind person is someone who lacks the ability to see with their physical eyes. However, this Hadith carries a deeper metaphorical meaning. It signifies a person who may be lacking in knowledge or insight, and yet, through some unforeseen means, they are able to achieve their desired objective.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-An'am, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 40:28)

Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.

This verse emphasizes the importance of righteousness and truthfulness in attaining guidance from Allah. However, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that even those who may lack knowledge or insight can still achieve their goals.

One example from the Quran that illustrates this concept is the story of the Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr (peace be upon them both). In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah narrates how Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) sought knowledge from Khidr, who possessed a special knowledge bestowed upon him by Allah. Despite Musa's extensive knowledge and prophethood, he was unable to comprehend the wisdom behind Khidr's actions. In the end, it was Khidr, the one who appeared "blind" in terms of conventional knowledge, who possessed the deeper insight and achieved his goal of preserving a righteous community.

This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that knowledge and insight are not limited to the outwardly apparent. It highlights the importance of humility and recognizing that guidance can come from unexpected sources. It teaches us that even those who may lack knowledge or insight can still achieve their goals through the blessings and guidance of Allah.

Furthermore, this Hadith also encourages Muslims to have hope and trust in Allah's plan. It reminds us that sometimes, despite our limitations and shortcomings, we can still attain success and reach our desired objectives. It is a call to persevere, even in the face of challenges and obstacles, and to have faith in the wisdom and mercy of Allah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

رُبَّما أصابَ العَمِيُّ قَصْدَهُ۔

conveys a enlightening message about the potential for success and achievement, even for those who may lack knowledge or insight. It reminds us to be open-minded, to seek guidance from unexpected sources, and to trust in Allah's plan. May Allah grant us the wisdom and understanding to apply this lesson in our lives.
