فَقْدُ البَصََرِأهْوَنُ مِنْ فِقْدانِ البَصيرَةِ۔
Loss of eyesight is easier than loss of insight.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sight, Observation And Insight)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Loss of eyesight is easier than loss of insight.
This enlightening saying highlights the significance of insight or understanding over mere physical eyesight. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith.
The word (faqdu) "فَقْدُ" means "loss" or "deprivation." It refers to the absence or lack of something that was previously possessed. In this context, it signifies the loss of a particular attribute or quality. The word (al-basar) "البَصَرِ" translates to "eyesight" or "vision." It represents the physical ability to see and perceive the world around us. On the other hand, (al-basirah) "البَصيرَةِ" refers to "insight" or "understanding." It signifies the intellectual and spiritual ability to comprehend and perceive deeper truths and realities.
To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46),
Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.
This verse emphasizes that true blindness is not caused by the physical impairment of the eyes but rather by the spiritual and intellectual blindness of the heart. It highlights the importance of insight and understanding, which are qualities of the heart, over mere eyesight. The eyes may see the physical world, but it is the heart that comprehends the deeper meanings and truths.
Another verse that complements the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-An'am (6:50), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Say, 'Have you considered: if His punishment should come to you by night or by day - for which [aspect] of it would the criminals be impatient?'
This verse highlights the importance of insight in recognizing the signs and consequences of Allah's punishment. It implies that those who lack insight are unable to perceive the impending punishment and thus remain impatient and heedless. This further emphasizes the superiority of insight over mere eyesight.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the development of their intellectual and spiritual faculties. It encourages us to seek knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, as they are far more valuable than the physical ability to see. While eyesight may be lost due to various reasons, insight can be cultivated and enhanced through continuous learning and reflection.
The consequences of neglecting insight are significant. Without insight, one may fail to recognize the truth, make informed decisions, and navigate the complexities of life. It is through insight that we can discern between right and wrong, distinguish between beneficial and harmful actions, and understand the deeper meanings and purposes of our existence.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to cultivate and strengthen our insight by seeking knowledge, reflecting on the Quran, and emulating the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his purified progeny. By doing so, we can attain a deeper understanding of ourselves, our faith, and the world around us. May Allah grant us the ability to develop and preserve our insight, and may He bless us with the guidance to navigate through life with wisdom and understanding.
