Give people your forgiveness and pardon just as you would like Allah, the Glorified, to grant [it] to you, and never regret showing forgiveness [to others].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forgiveness And Pardon)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and pardon in our interactions with others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to give people our forgiveness and pardon, just as we would like Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to grant it to us. He further advises us to never regret showing forgiveness to others.
To truly understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (afwik) "عَفْوِكَ" refers to forgiveness, while (safhik) "صَفْحِكَ" means pardon. These two words encompass the act of letting go of resentment and anger towards someone who has wronged us, and instead, choosing to forgive and pardon them.
The Hadith draws our attention to the fact that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate source of forgiveness and mercy. Just as we desire His forgiveness and mercy, we should also extend the same to others. This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nur (24:22):
Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Furthermore, the Hadith advises us to never regret showing forgiveness to others. Regretting an act of forgiveness implies a lack of trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) wisdom and justice. It is a reminder that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, but rather a manifestation of strength and a reflection of our faith in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) divine plan.
In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the virtue of restraining anger and pardoning others, which aligns perfectly with the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the Hadith.
Practicing forgiveness and pardon not only brings about personal growth and spiritual elevation, but it also fosters harmony and unity within the Muslim community. It allows us to build strong and lasting relationships based on compassion and understanding. Moreover, forgiveness has the power to break the cycle of hatred and revenge, leading to a more peaceful and just society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the teachings of this Hadith throughout his life. His forgiveness towards those who wronged him, even in the most difficult of circumstances, serves as a timeless example for all Muslims to follow.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to embody the qualities of forgiveness and pardon in our interactions with others. It reminds us of the importance of seeking Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) forgiveness and mercy, and the need to extend the same to our fellow Muslims. By practicing forgiveness and never regretting it, we can strive towards personal growth, strengthen our relationships, and contribute to a more harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to forgive and pardon others, just as we hope for His forgiveness and mercy.
