Eschew extravagance, for neither is the generosity of the extravagant...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Extravagance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to avoid extravagance and wastefulness. The word (sarafa) "سَرَفَ" in Arabic refers to excessive spending or indulgence in luxury beyond what is necessary or reasonable. The word (musrif) "مُسْرِفَ" refers to someone who engages in such extravagance. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that the generosity of the extravagant is not praiseworthy, and their indigence or poverty is not deserving of sympathy.

This guidance from Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes moderation and avoiding excess in various verses. For example, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah says,

O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.

This verse encourages Muslims to enjoy the blessings of Allah but to do so in moderation, without going to extremes.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra (17:29), Allah warns against extravagance, saying,

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

This verse cautions against spending recklessly and becoming burdened with debt or financial difficulties. It highlights the importance of being responsible and avoiding wastefulness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to eschew extravagance is rooted in wisdom and practicality. Extravagant spending not only leads to financial strain but also promotes a culture of materialism and greed. It diverts resources away from more important causes, such as helping the needy and contributing to the betterment of society. By practicing moderation and avoiding extravagance, individuals can lead a balanced and fulfilling life, free from the burdens of excessive materialism.

Moreover, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance extends beyond financial matters. It serves as a reminder to Muslims to be mindful of their actions and intentions. Just as extravagance in spending is discouraged, extravagance in other aspects of life, such as speech, behavior, or emotions, should also be avoided. Islam teaches us to be moderate in all aspects of our lives, striking a balance between fulfilling our needs and desires while maintaining self-control and avoiding excess.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to refrain from extravagance and wastefulness. This advice is in line with the Quranic teachings of moderation and avoiding excess. By practicing moderation, Muslims can lead a balanced and fulfilling life, free from the burdens of excessive materialism and greed. Let us strive to follow the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and live a life of moderation and contentment, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all that we do.
