مَنْ أُنْعِمَ عَلَيْهِ فَشَكَرَ كَمَنِ ابْتُلِيَ فَصَبَرَ۔
One who is bestowed with a blessing and gives thanks for it is like the one who is tried with difficulties and bears them patiently.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أُنْعِمَ عَلَيْهِ فَشَكَرَ كَمَنِ ابْتُلِيَ فَصَبَرَ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of gratitude and patience in the face of blessings and trials. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore its profound implications in light of the Quran.
The word (un'imah) "أُنْعِمَ" in the Hadith refers to being bestowed with blessings or favors from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses all forms of blessings, whether they are material, spiritual, or emotional. It is a reminder that every blessing we receive is a gift from Allah, and it is our duty to acknowledge and appreciate these blessings.
On the other hand, the word (ibtuliya) "ابْتُلِيَ" in the Hadith refers to being tried or tested with difficulties. It signifies the challenges and hardships that we may encounter in our lives. These trials can come in various forms, such as loss, illness, or adversity. It is a reminder that life is not always smooth, and we are bound to face difficulties at some point.
The Hadith draws a parallel between gratitude for blessings and patience in the face of trials. It states that the one who is grateful for the blessings bestowed upon them is equivalent to the one who patiently endures the trials they face. This comparison highlights the importance of both gratitude and patience in our lives as Muslims.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of gratitude. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse clearly states that gratitude leads to an increase in blessings from Allah. It is a means of attracting more goodness into our lives.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Nahl (16:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse reminds us that the blessings we receive from Allah are countless and immeasurable. It encourages us to reflect upon these blessings and express gratitude for them.
Similarly, the Quran also emphasizes the importance of patience in times of trials and difficulties. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155-157),
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
These verses highlight the virtue of patience in times of trials and tribulations. They remind us that through patience, we can earn the blessings and mercy of Allah. Patience enables us to navigate through difficult times with resilience and trust in Allah's plan.
In light of this Hadith, we can understand that gratitude and patience are intertwined virtues. When we are grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us, we acknowledge Allah's favor upon us. This gratitude leads to contentment and a positive outlook on life. Similarly, when we exercise patience in the face of trials, we demonstrate our trust in Allah's wisdom and plan. This patience helps us endure hardships with strength and resilience.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the concept of balance in our lives as Muslims. It reminds us that life is a mixture of blessings and trials. We will experience moments of joy and moments of hardship. It is our duty to respond to both with gratitude and patience. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of gratitude and patience in our lives as Muslims. It teaches us that being grateful for blessings and patient in times of trials are equally virtuous acts. By expressing gratitude and exercising patience, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be grateful and patient in all circumstances.
