(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sustenance And One Who Seeks It)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

That which has been decreed for you will come to you, so take it easy in your earning.

Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the important words in this Hadith. The word (qudira) "قُدِرَ" means "decreed" or "ordained," signifying that everything that happens in our lives is predetermined by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (muktasab) "مُكْتَسَبِ" refers to our earnings or efforts.

To comprehend the essence of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the concept of predestination. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:22), Allah says,

No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy.

This verse reminds us that everything that befalls us is already recorded and destined by Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qamar (54:49), Allah states,

Indeed, all things We created with predestination.

This verse reinforces the idea that every aspect of our lives, including our earnings, is predetermined by Allah. Therefore, we should not excessively worry about our sustenance, but rather trust in Allah's divine plan.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement advises us to

take it easy in our earning.

This means that while we should strive and put in effort, we should not become consumed by the pursuit of wealth. We should not be overly attached to material possessions or allow the desire for wealth to overshadow our spiritual and moral obligations.

The Quran also emphasizes the importance of moderation and balance in our pursuit of wealth. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah warns against extravagance, saying,

And do not be excessive in your spending. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.

This verse reminds us to maintain a balanced approach towards earning and spending, avoiding both miserliness and extravagance.

Taking it easy in our earning does not mean we should be complacent or lazy. Rather, it encourages us to work diligently and ethically, while acknowledging that the ultimate outcome is in the hands of Allah. We should strive to earn a halal livelihood, fulfilling our responsibilities and obligations, but without becoming overly attached to the material world.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice has profound implications for our lives. By recognizing that our sustenance is already decreed by Allah, we can find peace and contentment in whatever situation we find ourselves in. We should not be consumed by anxiety or greed, but rather trust in Allah's wisdom and plan for us.

This Hadith also teaches us to focus on the spiritual aspects of our lives and prioritize our relationship with Allah over worldly pursuits. By taking it easy in our earning, we can dedicate more time and energy to acts of worship, seeking knowledge, and serving humanity. This balanced approach enables us to lead a fulfilling and purposeful life, in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that everything that is destined for us will come to us. We should strive and work diligently, but without becoming overly attached to wealth and possessions. By trusting in Allah's divine plan and taking it easy in our earning, we can find peace, contentment, and a balanced approach to life. May Allah guide us all to follow the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
