There is no part of the body that is less thankful than the eye, so do not give it what it seeks thereby letting it occupy you from the remembrance of Allah.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the importance of gratitude and the dangers of allowing our desires to distract us from the remembrance of Allah. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to understand its significance in light of the Quran.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating,

There is no part of the body that is less thankful than the eye.

This statement draws our attention to the fact that the eye is often inclined towards seeking worldly pleasures and distractions. Our eyes are constantly exposed to various forms of temptation in the world, such as material possessions, beauty, and entertainment. If we allow our eyes to indulge in these desires without restraint, they can become a source of ingratitude and distraction from the remembrance of Allah.

To support this understanding, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of following our desires. In Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:23), Allah says,

Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire? Then would you be responsible for him?

This verse emphasizes the importance of not allowing our desires to become our gods, as they can lead us astray from the path of righteousness and gratitude towards Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further advises,

So do not give it what it seeks, thereby letting it occupy you from the remembrance of Allah.

This guidance urges us to exercise self-control and discipline over our eyes. We should not indulge in everything that our eyes desire, as it can distract us from remembering Allah and fulfilling our obligations towards Him.

In the Quran, Allah repeatedly emphasizes the importance of remembering Him and being mindful of His presence in our lives. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:45), Allah says,

O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful.

This verse highlights the connection between remembrance of Allah and success. When we allow our eyes to be occupied with worldly distractions, we lose sight of the remembrance of Allah, and consequently, our success in this life and the Hereafter is compromised.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound advice in this Hadith serves as a reminder for us to be grateful for the blessings of sight and to use our eyes in a manner that pleases Allah. We should be mindful of the content we consume through our eyes, ensuring that it aligns with the teachings of Islam and does not distract us from our purpose in life.

Moreover, this Hadith teaches us the importance of self-discipline and self-control. By restraining our eyes from indulging in every desire, we can redirect our focus towards the remembrance of Allah. This can be achieved by engaging in acts of worship, such as reciting the Quran, performing prayers, and engaging in supplication. When we prioritize the remembrance of Allah over the fleeting pleasures of this world, we strengthen our relationship with Him and cultivate a sense of gratitude for His countless blessings.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of gratitude and self-control. It urges us to be mindful of the distractions that our eyes can bring and to prioritize the remembrance of Allah in our lives. By doing so, we can cultivate a state of gratitude, strengthen our connection with Allah, and ultimately attain success in this life and the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us the ability to be grateful and mindful in all aspects of our lives.
