There is no wealth like wisdom, no destitution like ignorance, no inheritance like refinement and no support like consultation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #54)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the importance of four key concepts: wisdom, ignorance, refinement, and consultation. Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in the light of the Quran.
The first concept mentioned is (العقل) "wisdom". Wisdom refers to the ability to think, reason, and make sound judgments. It encompasses knowledge, understanding, and the application of knowledge in a practical and beneficial manner. The Quran emphasizes the importance of wisdom in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.
This verse highlights the immense value and virtue of wisdom.
The second concept mentioned is (الجهل) "ignorance". Ignorance refers to the lack of knowledge, understanding, or awareness. It is a state of being uninformed or unaware of important matters. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and warns against the perils of ignorance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse highlights the dangers of acting upon incomplete or false information due to ignorance.
The third concept mentioned is (الأدب) "refinement". Refinement refers to the cultivation of good manners, ethics, and moral conduct. It encompasses the development of noble character traits and the adherence to proper etiquette. The Quran places great emphasis on the importance of good manners and ethical behavior. In Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying,
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
This verse highlights the exemplary refinement and noble character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), which serves as a model for all Muslims to emulate.
The fourth concept mentioned is (المشاورة) "consultation". Consultation refers to seeking advice, guidance, and input from others before making important decisions. It involves considering different perspectives and opinions in order to arrive at the best course of action. The Quran encourages Muslims to engage in consultation and highlights its benefits. In Surah Al-Imran (3:159), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter.
This verse demonstrates the importance of consultation in fostering unity, harmony, and effective decision-making within the Muslim community.
Now, let us reflect on the wise message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. He emphasizes that true wealth lies in wisdom, as it enables individuals to navigate through life's challenges and make informed choices. Ignorance, on the other hand, leads to destitution, as it hinders personal growth and limits opportunities for success.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also highlights the importance of refinement, as it is a valuable inheritance that shapes an individual's character and conduct. It is through refinement that one acquires the virtues and qualities necessary to lead a righteous and honorable life.
Furthermore, the Imam emphasizes the significance of consultation, as it serves as a support system for individuals and communities. By seeking the advice and input of others, one can benefit from their diverse perspectives and collective wisdom, leading to better decision-making and stronger bonds within society.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize wisdom over material wealth, seek knowledge and understanding to overcome ignorance, cultivate refinement in character and conduct, and engage in consultation to make well-informed decisions. By embodying these principles, Muslims can strive towards personal and collective growth, and ultimately, attain success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement these teachings in our lives.
