— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Appointed Time Of Death)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

قَدْ ذَهبَ عَنْ قُلُوبِكُمْ صِدْقُ الأجَلِ، وغَلَبَكُم غُرُورُ الأملِ۔

This Hadith highlights two important concepts: the reality of death and the deception of false hope.

Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "صِدْقُ الأجَلِ" refers to the truth and certainty of death. It reminds us that death is an inevitable reality that every soul will face. "غُرُورُ الأملِ" refers to the deception and delusion of false hope. It warns us against becoming overly attached to worldly desires and aspirations, which can lead us astray from the path of truth and righteousness.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly reminds us of the reality of death and the fleeting nature of worldly life. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:185)

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion?

This verse emphasizes the certainty of death and the temporary nature of worldly pleasures. It serves as a powerful reminder that our ultimate destination is the Hereafter, where our actions in this life will determine our eternal fate. The deception of false hope lies in becoming engrossed in the materialistic pursuits of this world, neglecting our spiritual growth and preparation for the Hereafter.

Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Munafiqun, where Allah says, (Quran 63:8)

And never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do - never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, and for them is a painful punishment.

This verse serves as a warning against the delusion of false hope. It reminds us that those who engage in wrongdoing and seek praise for their false accomplishments will ultimately face the consequences of their actions. It is a reminder that true success lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah and striving for righteousness, rather than being deceived by worldly achievements and accolades.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that it serves as a wake-up call for Muslims to reevaluate their priorities and refocus their hearts and minds on the reality of death and the Hereafter. It urges us to detach ourselves from the illusions of this world and to strive for spiritual growth and righteousness.

By remembering the certainty of death, we are motivated to make the most of our time in this world, utilizing it to perform good deeds, seek knowledge, and strengthen our relationship with Allah. We are reminded to be mindful of our actions and intentions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam and contribute to our eternal success.

Furthermore, the Hadith warns us against being deceived by false hopes and worldly desires. It reminds us that true fulfillment and contentment can only be found in seeking the pleasure of Allah and striving for the Hereafter. It encourages us to be cautious of becoming attached to material possessions, fame, and worldly achievements, as they are temporary and will not bring lasting happiness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to awaken from the slumber of heedlessness and to prioritize the reality of death and the Hereafter. It urges us to detach ourselves from the deception of false hope and to strive for righteousness and spiritual growth. May Allah guide us all to live a life that is mindful of our ultimate destination and grant us success in both this world and the Hereafter.
