— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

عَوْدُكَ إلَى الحَقِّ خَيْرٌ مِنْ تَماديكَ فيِ الباطِلِ۔

This powerful statement can be translated as,

Your return to the truth is better than your persisting in falsehood.

Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. "عَوْدُكَ" refers to one's return or turning back, indicating a change in direction or mindset. "الحَقِّ" refers to the truth, which is in alignment with the divine guidance and the teachings of Islam. "تَماديكَ" refers to persisting or remaining steadfast, while "الباطِلِ" refers to falsehood or anything that deviates from the truth.

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256),

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.

This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing the path of truth willingly and without coercion. It highlights the significance of returning to the truth and abandoning falsehood.

Furthermore, in Surah Yunus (10:108), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Say, 'O mankind, the truth has come to you from your Lord. So whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul, and whoever goes astray only goes astray [in violation] against it. And I am not over you a manager.'

This verse emphasizes that the responsibility of choosing the truth lies with each individual. It is a personal journey towards enlightenment and guidance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of constantly reevaluating our beliefs and actions. It encourages us to reflect on our choices and make the necessary adjustments to align ourselves with the truth. This Hadith teaches us that it is better to acknowledge our mistakes and return to the path of truth, rather than persisting in falsehood out of pride or stubbornness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom. His words in this Hadith serve as a reminder that true knowledge is not merely about acquiring information, but also about recognizing and accepting the truth. It is about having the humility to admit when we are wrong and the courage to change our ways.

The consequences of persisting in falsehood can be detrimental to both our spiritual and worldly lives. By clinging to falsehood, we distance ourselves from the mercy and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We may find temporary satisfaction in our ego-driven pursuits, but in the long run, we will only face disappointment and regret.

On the other hand, returning to the truth brings immense blessings and benefits. It allows us to experience the peace and tranquility that comes from being in harmony with Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guidance. It opens the doors to personal growth, spiritual enlightenment, and a closer relationship with our Creator. It also enables us to make positive contributions to society and fulfill our purpose as Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their beliefs and actions. It urges us to prioritize the pursuit of truth over the persistence in falsehood. By returning to the truth, we align ourselves with the divine guidance and experience the countless blessings that come with it. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to always seek the truth and make the necessary changes in our lives.
