Keep on enduring and remain firm, until the pillar of truth illuminates upon you while you have the upper hand, and Allah is with you, and never will He stint [the reward of] your deeds.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Keep on enduring and remain firm, until the pillar of truth illuminates upon you while you have the upper hand, and Allah is with you, and never will He stint [the reward of] your deeds.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds immense wisdom and guidance for Muslims of all times.

Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, starting with the important words it contains. The word (samdan) "صَمْداً" means to endure or persevere with steadfastness. It implies remaining firm and resolute in the face of challenges and difficulties. The word (yanjali) "يَنْجَلي" means to illuminate or become clear. It signifies the manifestation of truth and clarity after a period of darkness or confusion. The phrase (amoodu al-haqq) "عَمُودُ الحَقِّ" refers to the pillar of truth, symbolizing the strength and stability of the truth. The phrase (al-a'lawna) "الأعْلَوْنَ" means to have the upper hand or to be in a position of advantage. It denotes the state of dominance and authority.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:139),

So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.

This verse emphasizes the importance of remaining steadfast in faith and not losing hope in the face of challenges. It assures the believers that they will attain superiority if they hold onto their faith with unwavering determination.

Another verse that resonates with the message of Imam Ali's Hadith is found in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:40), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.'

This verse highlights the unwavering support and assistance of Allah towards His chosen messengers and their righteous companions. It serves as a reminder that Allah is always with those who strive for truth and righteousness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages Muslims to persevere and remain steadfast in their beliefs and actions, even in the face of adversity. It reminds us that the truth will eventually prevail, and clarity will emerge from the darkness. By maintaining our faith and upholding the principles of Islam, we can be assured of Allah's support and assistance.

This Hadith also serves as a motivation for Muslims to continue their good deeds and acts of righteousness. It assures us that Allah will never diminish the reward of our efforts. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Hajj (22:30), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.

This verse emphasizes the significance of fulfilling our obligations and performing righteous deeds, as they hold great value in the sight of Allah.

The consequences of adhering to the teachings of this Hadith are profound. By enduring and remaining firm in the face of challenges, we strengthen our faith and character. We become beacons of truth and righteousness, guiding others towards the path of Islam. Our steadfastness also inspires others and instills confidence in the hearts of fellow Muslims.
