Hadith #2786

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the consequences of arrogance and haughtiness in leadership. O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse reminds us to avoid ridiculing or belittling others, as we do not know their true worth in the sight of Allah. It teaches us to treat all individuals with respect and dignity, regardless of their social status or position.

Another relevant verse is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:76):

Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, 'Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.'

This verse tells the story of Qarun, who was blessed with great wealth and power but became arrogant and oppressive towards his people. Despite his wealth, he was ultimately punished by Allah for his arrogance and his people warned him against exulting in his riches.

From these verses, we can understand that arrogance and haughtiness are condemned in Islam. They are traits that lead to the oppression and mistreatment of others, and ultimately result in disgrace and humiliation for the one who possesses them.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to leaders and those in positions of authority to exercise humility and to treat others with fairness and justice. It warns against the abuse of power and the disregard for the rights and dignity of others.

When a leader becomes arrogant and abuses their authority, they create an environment of fear, oppression, and injustice. This not only harms those who are oppressed but also undermines the stability and well-being of the entire society. As Muslims, we are reminded to seek knowledge and wisdom from the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Quran. We should strive to be humble in our interactions with others and to treat everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of their social status or position. We should also hold our leaders accountable and demand justice and fairness from them.
