I am the allotter of hellfire, the treasurer of the gardens [of Paradise], the owner of the pond [of Kawthar] and the holder of the Elevations, and there is no Imam from among us, the household [of the Prophet], except that he knows those who are his sincere friends [and followers], and this is the meaning of the words of the Most High: ‘You are only a warner, and there is a guide for every people’.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights his unique position and authority within the household of the Prophet (ﷺ). Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound Hadith in light of the Quran.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating,
I am the allotter of hellfire, the treasurer of the gardens [of Paradise], the owner of the pond [of Kawthar] and the holder of the Elevations.
These descriptions emphasize Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) role as a custodian of both reward and punishment, as well as his authority over the blessings of Paradise.
To understand the significance of these titles, we can refer to the Quran. In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:102-103), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Then those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds], it is they who will be successful. But those whose scales are light, they are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hellfire, abiding eternally.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is the one who has the authority to determine the weight of our deeds and allocate our place in the hereafter. He is the treasurer of the gardens of Paradise, responsible for distributing the rewards to the righteous. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Insan (76:12), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And they will be given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger from a fountain within Paradise named Salsabeel.
Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is described as the owner of the pond of Kawthar. This refers to the blessed pond that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has granted to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as a special gift. In Surah Al-Kawthar (108:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar.
This pond symbolizes the abundance of blessings and intercession granted to the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is also described as the holder of the Elevations. This signifies his elevated status and knowledge. He possesses profound understanding and insight into the matters of faith and guidance. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states,
and there is no Imam from among us, the household [of the Prophet], except that he knows those who are his sincere friends [and followers].
This highlights the inherent knowledge and recognition possessed by the Imams from the Ahl al-Bayt. They have the ability to identify and distinguish their true followers, those who sincerely adhere to their teachings and guidance.
This statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is supported by the Quranic verse in Surah Hud (11:17), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.
The Imams possess the knowledge to differentiate between those who truly believe and those who merely claim to be followers.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights his authority and knowledge as the custodian of rewards and punishments, the owner of blessings, and the holder of elevated knowledge. It also emphasizes the Imams' ability to recognize their sincere followers. As Muslims, we should strive to understand and follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Ahl al-Bayt, seeking their intercession and guidance in our journey towards the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to comprehend and implement the profound wisdom contained within this Hadith.
