Hadith #8013

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العُيُونُ طَلائِعُ القُلُوبِ" which translates to

Eyes are the informers of the heart.

This enlightening saying highlights the connection between the eyes and the heart, emphasizing the significance of visual perception in understanding the inner state of a person.

Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words. The word (eyes) "العُيُونُ" refers to the physical organs of sight, which enable us to perceive the world around us. To further comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46),

Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.

This verse emphasizes the importance of having a sound heart and a perceptive mind. It reminds us that the eyes alone are not sufficient for true understanding; rather, it is the state of our hearts that determines our ability to comprehend and internalize what we see. And they have hearts wherewith they understand not, and they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones.

This verse highlights the consequences of having eyes that do not truly perceive and hearts that do not comprehend.
